As cleanup efforts are still underway for a massive fire that displaced dozens in Bushwick earlier this month, the Department of Environmental Protection confirmed that some of the buildings in that fire have asbestos.
One displaced tenant tells News 12 they learned they may have been exposed to asbestos during the fire that started at Christa’s Kitchen.
The tenant showed News 12 a photo of an asbestos tent set up outside of 63 Cooper Street the night after the May 1 fire. The DEP has not expanded on how many buildings in particular contain asbestos, but they did confirm that asbestos material was found on the roof of that address.
According to nyc.gov, people who breathe in asbestos fibers are at risk for diseases including lung cancer, digestive tract cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
One neighbor of 63 Cooper Street says they are concerned about their exposure to that asbestos.
