Mayor Eric Adams announced a new pilot program in the city's fight against retail theft.

Businesses across the five boroughs will be able to share their security camera feeds with the nearest police precinct if they choose. The city says this will allow the NYPD to investigate crimes faster and deter crime from happening at nearby stores.

"Anything that erodes that feeling of safety is going to get in the way of and overshadow the success we're doing statistically," said Mayor Adams. "And nothing erodes it more than going into your local store and you have to call someone to unlock the toothpaste."

Stores that want to opt in have the ability to choose when to share their camera feeds to police.
