Over 400 people flocked to the Tong in Bushwick Sunday to witness the second annual BLAZEFURY Spicy Wing Showdown.

The 20 participants braved 10 chicken wings smothered in pepper sauces for all the bragging rights, while onlookers got a chance to sample traditional Thai street foods and beverages.

Some participants tapped out before the 10th chicken wing, saying they were not prepared for the full body reaction the wings brought out.

"I had no idea what to expect. I just went with it and I think I got six or seven wings down. It was really bad," said participant Eric Kachan, who plans to return again next year.

The challenge was bested by a few brave competitors including reigning champion Zahirudd Khan, who was presented a medal. He told News 12 that along with some big pints of ice cream afterwards, his trick was getting the wings down as fast as possible.

"I came in first place, ate the chicken wings in less than one minute. That's what you call a champion," he said.

Owners of Tong Brooklyn say they are glad to see the reception the event has generated, and say they are proud to help give the community a fun experience.

“I had a restaurant in Manhattan, I closed and move to this neighborhood. The people are great. They supported us through COVID so, I hope everyone has a great time," said owner Pat Derry.

Derry said that while the wings are an off-menu item, a more mild version is available year-round for customers looking to get a fraction of the heat of the tournament.
