I.S. 49 temporarily evacuated amid bomb threat in Brooklyn
According to officials, the man called police and told them he planted bombs at I.S. 49 located on Graham Avenue.
NYC police and fire marshals say they responded to a call from an unidentified male regarding a bomb threat inside of I.S. 49. on Monday.
They say it happened around 9 a.m.
Law enforcement sources say they received a call from a man who said he planted bombs inside of the intermediate school at 223 Graham Ave.
The building houses three separate schools inside.
Hundreds of students were evacuated while the NYPD and the Emergency Services Unit conducted a search.
The Department of Education sent an email out to parents informing them of the bomb threat and stating that "the safety and well-being of [their] students and staff are [their] top priority," and that "they are taking all necessary precautions to ensure everyone's safety."
According to police, the building has been cleared of any devices and the Department of Education stated that "the threat was non-credible."
Students went back inside the school around 10:30 a.m.
"It was confusing, why was this happening to our school?," said I.S. 49 student Jeniah Harrison. "Hearing that a lot of schools are getting targeted for these kinds of situations is just wild.
Jeniah's mother also recounted the chaotic event, stating she only found out about the bomb threat after her daughter called her and then received an email from the school.
Other parents, like Sofia Ramos, recounted the shocking event, claiming to only have found out through word of mouth while working at her job at a local deli.
The Department of Education says it is working closely with law enforcement to continue to address the threat.
