Residents in Coney Island faced an unexpected disruption on West 28th Street when a significant sinkhole appeared, drawing attention and concern from the community.

The sinkhole, which first appeared on Monday morning, has forced local authorities to close off the street to drivers.

Inside the sinkhole, there appears to be water gushing from what appears to be a ruptured pipe.

Crews arrived on the scene shortly after 8:30 a.m. to assess the situation, but as of now, the area remains closed with caution tape and garbage cans placed for safety.

Officials from the fire department say no injuries occurred as a result of the incident.

Residents living nearby have expressed their worries regarding the safety implications of the sinkhole.

"This is a concern. What are they going to do about this? Are they going to move us from out of this danger or what? Because this is not good for us to live here," said a resident.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Environmental Protection and is awaiting further updates.

Residents say they hope for a swift resolution that will prevent any long-term impact on their neighborhood.
