Brooklyn’s Wegmans alerts customers about facial recognition pilot program

A new sign posted at the entrance to Wegmans near the Brooklyn Navy Yard is warning customers about a new facial recognition program the company is using. The grocery chain says it's for employees only.
The sign reads, "We are piloting a facial recognition program with a small group of employees at this location. All related information collected of those not enrolled in our pilot will be deleted from the piloted technology."
The sign follows a New York City law that states all businesses that collect biometric data must notify their customers with "a clear and conspicuous sign" at the entrance to their establishment.
Some on social media said they “won’t be going there any longer” and called the technology “invasive.”
Others say it doesn't bother them.
“I don’t really know too much about that, but I’m not too concerned about it," said Dolores, a long time Navy Yard resident.
