DUMBO residents push for task force to address street vending concerns

As warmer weather brings an influx of tourists to DUMBO, some residents say street vending is creating sanitation and crowding issues - and they want the city to step in.

Supporters say vendors add to the neighborhood’s charm but argue that some fail to follow sanitation rules, leading to trash buildup and rodent problems.
"Leftover pretzel and hot dog bits are discarded and that attracts rats," said Jimmy, a DUMBO resident backing the petition.
Street vendors were banned from setting up on the Brooklyn Bridge last year, forcing many to relocate to the surrounding streets. That’s made busy sidewalks even more crowded, according to residents.
The proposed task force would include city agencies, like the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and the NYPD, to improve enforcement.
DSNY says that since July 2024, it has conducted 12 visits, 41 inspections, confiscated three vendor setups, and issued 19 summonses to street vendors in the area.
The DUMBO Business Improvement District supports the effort, calling it a "city enforcement issue."
But some vendors say they’re already facing strict enforcement. Advocates for street vendors argue the task force should include vendors and their representatives, not just enforcement agencies.
"Bringing all stakeholders together, not just enforcement agencies. We believe that bringing in education and invite them to do outreach and educate the vendors on the rules will go a long way," said Mohamed Attia, managing director of the Street Vendor Project.
