A large police presence was on the scene, at some point warning protesters of the possibility of being charged with disorderly conduct.

Protesters said they were first told the new development would be affordable housing, before changing to a shelter.

The mayor’s office tells News 12 that the community was informed that this project would move forward as a new transitional housing facility more than a year ago. It’s the first-of-its-kind in the district and meant to provide long-term housing for nearly 170 families with children—- with a priority for those already living in the area.

Officers were heard on a megaphone warning the crowd that protesters could be charged with disorderly conduct.

The Department of Social Services released the following statement:

“While these protestors have every right to publicly express their views and opinions, they must do so peacefully and in a manner which complies with the law. In accordance with a recently issued court order, the developer is allowed to enter the property free of any impediments to access. We will continue to maintain open lines of communication with all stakeholders and elected officials from the area in order keep them apprised of the status of this project.”
