2026 New York state budget to focus millions on subway safety

The proposed 2026 budget for New York state will have millions pledged to focus on keeping subways safe.
Some of the funds Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed would go toward everything from a bigger police presence to outreach teams that help vulnerable people who may find themselves on the subways.
“Mark my words, I will do everything in my power to ensure that the people of this city and this state are safe,” Hochul said. “And I will put the investments where they need to go, make the changes in law that are necessary. Because we won't stop until every single person has what they deserve: the right to be safe in their homes and communities and on our subways."
Protective barriers are also part of Hochul’s plan to make riding the subway safer.
Funding is also expected to bring new turnstiles to more than 100 subway stations across the city.
