Brian Taylor and Larry Sutton have shared a bond for 45 years, growing up together in Bed-Stuy, joining the same fraternity - and now sharing a kidney.

After a successful transplant on June 2 at NorthShore University Hospital, their lifelong friendship has deepened in ways they never imagined.

“Words can express the love that I have for him. You know, I can’t even put it into words. I feel like he saved my life, and when someone does that for you, you feel indebted to them for your life,” Sutton said.

Earlier this year, Taylor surprised Sutton by stepping forward as a donor. The match, considered unlikely, saved Sutton years on the waiting list, according to doctors at Northwell Health.

For Sutton, the transplant has been life-changing after two years of dialysis. “I feel great, I feel like a lucky guy,” he said.

As the friends reconnect, they reflect on a presence that now feels closer than ever; Taylor’s brother, who died of kidney failure two decades ago. Though Taylor couldn’t save his brother, he was able to save his friend.

“When I found out, I felt my brother’s spirit putting his hand on me, saying good job, I felt like my brother was there” Taylor said, recounting the moment he found out him and Sutton were a match.

“It’s like a second change at life,” Sutton said adding “this guy has been my kidney advocate, an incredible friend.”
