Coney Island Mermaid Parade returns this weekend, marking unofficial start of summer in South Brooklyn
Now in its 43rd year, the celebration brings more than 5,000 participants to Surf Avenue, strutting in glittery mermaid costumes and bringing color and creativity to the boardwalk.

Now in its 43rd year, the celebration brings more than 5,000 participants to Surf Avenue, strutting in glittery mermaid costumes and bringing color and creativity to the boardwalk.
“The artistry, the pageantry, the creativity are all of the people. We just put on the day, and the people are the ones who bring the magic,” said Adam Rinn, director of Coney Island USA.
Organizers are excited to be back, but are also raising concerns. A proposed casino development in the area has some worried that this could be one of the last parades.
“Would it change the parade route? Potentially. Would it change the face of this neighborhood? Absolutely. Come out and show New York City, show our politicians what this city stands to lose if this casino shows up here,” Rinn said.
A City Council vote on the casino plan is set for next week. In the meantime, boardwalk businesses are counting on the boost the parade brings.
“It’s our second biggest sales day of the year. The weather is looking good, so I’m hoping it stays that way. Fingers crossed for us,” said Dennis Vourderis, owner of the Wonder Wheel rollercoaster, adding that he believes a casino would be a threat to Coney Island history.
The parade lineup begins at the Coney Island Amphitheater, with the celebrations starting at 1 p.m.
