Fourth of July is on Friday, but the FDNY and NYPD are getting ahead and cracking down on the sale of illegal fireworks.
A tip to FDNY led fire marshals to the Everbright Trading Company warehouse, where they seized more than 1,000 fireworks and arrested 42-year-old manager Lisen Pan.
Pan is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and unlawfully dealing with fireworks and dangerous fireworks – worth about $250,000.
The June 24 bust was a joint effort between the FDNY and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
All consumer fireworks are illegal in New York City. If found selling fireworks, one is subject to multiple charges and a fine. Despite the punishment that comes with selling illegal fireworks, residents say it won't change much.
"This is New York, there's noises going on outside every day," said neighbor Ryan Peterson. "You'll hear some fireworks popping off, but I don't have a problem with it."
As the July 4 holiday approaches, officials are asking for help reporting the sale, use and/or storage of fireworks by calling 311.
The NYPD says fireworks cause nearly 20,000 fires and 10,000 injuries annually, with 30% of those injuries happening to kids under 15.
