Cyclists in Williamsburg demanded safer bike lanes for Kent Avenue one year ago.

On Thursday, News 12 caught up with riders and a local resident to see if those changes were made.

A near mile-long stretch of a two-way bike lane on Kent Avenue is bustling with riders, but when it comes to safety and efficiency of the lane —people had mixed reviews.

"It used to be better. It could use some improvements," said Diego Cadena, a frequent rider along Kent Avenue.

"I think it's designed pretty well, especially since some of them in the city can get like really crowded, especially like midtown or like West Village. This one's like, pretty secluded and it's like one way. So I think it's pretty safe," said Chris Ramos, a local resident.

As News 12 previously reported, cyclists and residents in the area were asking for improvements to what Council Member Lincoln Restler said was one of the busiest bike lanes in the city.

Restler called on the city to create a capital plan, which sources say has not happened yet.

Riders News 12 spoke with say small changes, like better signaling could improve safety, but one rider says the responsibility falls on the pedestrians and drivers to share the streets.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation to see if any significant changes were made or if there were any plans for the future, but has not heard back.
