Tuesday's low temperatures saw Brooklyn residents rushing to their local hardware stores to buy space heaters.

“A lot of foot traffic, once people hear it’s getting cold out they flock here," said Les, the floor manager at Brooklyn's Best Locksmith & Hardware.

As the temperatures get colder, the FDNY is warning residents about how to safely heat their home.

Officials say to always plug space heaters directly into the outlet. Never use power strips or extension cords.

Only plug one appliance into the outlet at a time, and always keep the heaters at least 3 feet from combustibles.
