Two people were seriously hurt early Wednesday after a fire broke out inside a three-story building in Brownsville, according to the FDNY.

Fire officials say the call came in around 4:15 a.m. for a fire on the third floor of 303 Bradford St., between Pitkin and Belmont avenues. Roughly 60 firefighters and EMS members responded.

A neighbor who lives next door shared video showing the orange glow of flames right outside his window. He told News 12 he heard breaking glass before seeing fire spread on the top floor.

“I heard glass break, so I went to the other window and I saw fire,” he said. “I called 911, ran downstairs and started ringing bells to make sure everyone got out.”

FDNY says the fire started in a top-floor apartment and spread to part of the roof before crews got it under control in about 41 minutes.

One of the two people injured, a man known as 'Shorty', was sent to Staten Island University Hospital and is being treated for smoke inhalation, according to a source close to the incident.

The second person is his girlfriend, the source said.

She was transferred to Jacobi Hospital and is being treated for burns. She is still said to be in critical condition.

Fire Marshals are now investigating the cause of the fire. The building is currently without electricity, and the Red Cross is on the scene speaking with neighbors and anyone who may need help.

The Red Cross is offering help to 4 people who were displaced in the fire.

News 12 will update this story as more information becomes available.
