Neighbors in Bergen Beach say a residential intersection has turned into a daily stage for dangerous doughnuts, screeching tires, and high-speed driving, and they’re demanding immediate safety improvements.

Residents who live near Avenue T and Royce Street describe a constant pattern of chaos.

“It seems like several times a week it's just loud. 'Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom!' And then the smoke! It’s annoying,” said resident Baraka Smith, who has witnessed the takeover-style driving too many times to count.

Others say the reckless behavior has escalated beyond nuisance and is now a serious threat.

“I saw somebody doing what’s called doughnuts at this intersection - very high speed, very loud, very, very dangerous,” said Barbara O., another nearby resident.

The tipping point came after a tragic hit-and-run involving a beloved neighborhood pet. In response, neighbors launched a petition requesting speed bumps and a safety island. The petition has already gathered nearly 170 signatures, and more are being added daily.

“There is no light here, no stop signs here, so some people come very fast,” said Enid Grant, who has lived in the area for years. “I need a stop sign here.”

City data shows six traffic accidents occurred along Avenue T in the month of October alone, reinforcing what residents say they’ve been warning about: the danger is real, and it’s growing.

“It’s been very concerning; something needs to be done,” Grant added. When contacted about the situation, the Department of Transportation said it will review the community’s requests.

Residents say they’ll continue pushing until meaningful safety measures are in place.
