Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a plan to ban junk fees on hotel stays.

"This is something we are bringing to an end," said Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani says this rule goes a step further than the national one already in place by the FTC, by requiring transparency on mandatory credit card holds and deposits.

"Those who treat their customers fairly will not be affected, those who have long approached business as an opportunity to mistreat those who they serve, let today be a warning, if you do not change your practices, city government will change it for you," the mayor said.

The announcement follows a previous executive order that was signed in early January to crackdown on hidden junk fees for subscription-based services, memberships and delivery apps.

The Department of Consumer Worker Protection launched a "junk fee task force" that will operate citywide to audit businesses who are hiding junk fees under false labels.

"These fees often called resort fees or destination fees are incredibly frustrating to consumers, last year alone our department received more than 300 complaints about them, an economist estimates that they cost New Yorkers and our visitors more than $65 million dollars every year in wasted time," said Sam Levine, DCWP commissioner.

Levine says all in-pricing requirements will take effect on Feb. 22.
