An East New York Woman is on a mission to make a difference in her community, starting with the youth.

Alyssa Abernathy says her nonprofit, Life Equip Group, has helped hundreds in the community since its start in 2019.

She says the idea of helping others stemmed from a time where she needed help herself.

"I was a teen mom, a high school dropout. I dealt with homelessness," said Abernathy

While defying the odds against her, Abernathy said she knew she wanted to help others evolve from their tribulations.

"I wanted to create a safe space for youth and young adults to be able to come in and get the resources, get the information and design the level of success they desire," she explained.

Abernathy says through her nonprofit organization, she has been able to help youth and young adults ages 5-24 from disadvantaged communities with life skills, educational resources and opportunities for personal growth.

One of the ways she has been able to do that is by providing scholarships from her Brown Girls Learn program.

"We're raising money to be able to give back to young girls that are going to college," explained Abernathy.

The founder and CEO said this year the organization is doing something new.

"This year. we're doing our first community baby shower. This is not a normal baby shower - it's not only giving back to mothers, it's giving back to fathers, but we wanted to focus on young people. They need resources, so I'm really excited about the community baby shower," shared Abernathy.

She hopes the community will come together to volunteer and donate to give back in a big way.

She said she is looking for other organizations to partner with Life Equip Group.

Abernathy also said The Life Equip Group is looking for volunteers from the community to help during events.
