Nassau County police arrested a Williston Park man, accused of severely beating his mother inside a home on Wednesday evening.

Officials said investigators responded to 23 Broad St. just before 6 p.m.

The victim, a 75-year-old woman who Nassau County police did not identify, told detectives that she was attacked inside her home after getting into an argument with her son, identified as John Strano, 37, which turned violent.

According to police, Strano pushed his mother to the floor, repeatedly slammed her head to the ground, punched her in the face numerous times and struck her head with a blunt metal object, then choked her before he fled the scene.

In court, prosecutors said Strano struck his mom more than three dozen times using a metal clamp in the back of her head.

He also admitted to police that during the attack, he yelled at his mother, "Why aren't you dying?" and "Why are you still breathing?"

The incident shut down part of Broad Street for several hours as dozens of officers investigated, witnesses said.

Prosecutors said the victim suffered swelling to her entire face and head, severe lacerations and lost consciousness. Nassau County police said she was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

Strano was located about a mile away from the home and pictures from witnesses given to News 12 showed Nassau County police taking him into custody on the baseball field of Center Street Elementary School hours after students had left for the day.

The Herricks School District told News 12 that it "is aware of the situation, but has no comment."

Nassau County police charged Strano with 2nd degree attempted murder, two counts of 2nd degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing/blood circulation and 4th degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Strano pleaded not guilty and was remanded.
