A juvenile was arrested in connection with a fatal carjacking attempt in Newark that left a delivery driver dead, authorities said Wednesday.

The suspect was detained Tuesday, April 7, and faces several charges, including felony murder, carjacking and vehicular homicide, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office. Authorities did not release the suspect’s identity because of the person's age.

Prosecutors said the incident happened Saturday, April 4, at about 12:45 p.m., when Jhon Aponte Alarcon, 46, left his vehicle unattended while delivering packages on Bergen Street.

Investigators said the suspect got into the vehicle, and Aponte Alarcon held on in an attempt to stop the driver from taking it.

The vehicle went south on Bergen Street before crashing into a parked car, overturning and crushing Aponte Alarcon, authorities said. The suspect then ran away.

Aponte Alarcon was taken to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The juvenile is also charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, endangering an injured victim and theft of a motor vehicle.
