A seal that was recovering from pneumonia at the Mystic Aquarium was released back into the ocean Thursday, staff say.
Rockie, a gray seal, was rescued from the northern point of Block Island in Rhode Island.
The aquarium's Animal Rescue Program admitted him after they saw him in the same spot for a few days. At the time, they say he was exhibiting increased respiratory effort and lethargy.
After being diagnosed with pneumonia, he was given antibiotics along with fluid and nutritional support.
Staff say Rockie was able to recover because of that treatment and around-the-clock care.
The Animal Rescue Program released Rockie in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and Block Island Maritime Institute.
