Voters across parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties are casting ballots today to decide who will fill Gov. Sherrill's former seat in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District.

Democrat Ana‑Lilia Mejia, Republican Joe Hathaway and Independent Alan Bond are seeking to win the open seat.

Democrats hold about a 60,000‑voter registration advantage in the district, officials said.

The winner of the special election will serve only until January.

That means the victor will need to run again in the November midterm election to keep the seat.

Polls are scheduled to close at 8 p.m.
