A 78-year-old man was fatally shot late Thursday night in Mott Haven, police said.

Authorities identified the victim as Edgar Spence. He was found with a gunshot wound to the torso just steps from his home on Alexander Avenue.

Police said they received a 911 call reporting an assault at 205 Alexander Ave. shortly before 10:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found Spence with a gun shot to his torso.

First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene, including chest compressions, as seen in citizen video that also showed a large police presence. Spence was transported for treatment but could not be saved.

Police sources said Spence was not the intended target and appeared to be an innocent bystander.

No arrests have been made.
