Families displaced after apartment fire in Yonkers

A fire in Yonkers left multiple families without a place to live after flames tore through an apartment building on the corner of Yonkers Avenue and Walnut Street on Saturday morning.
Officials say the fire started just after 10 a.m. on the second floor and quickly spread, sending heavy smoke through the building. The Yonkers Fire Department responded within minutes and encountered flames coming from a second-floor window.
More than a dozen residents from six families were able to escape. One resident, Marcos, said he saw smoke in the kitchen and rushed to get everyone out safely.
Firefighters also rescued one person from the fourth floor using a bucket truck.
Authorities say the fire was largely contained, with some extension to the third floor.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital with injuries that had not been disclosed as of Saturday afternoon.
No civilian injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross was assisting displaced residents as officials were determining whether the building was safe to re-enter as of Saturday afternoon.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known.
