On their second attempt, the Connecticut House passed legislation on a party-live vote Thursday that would let anyone vote by mail without an excuse.
The bill now heads to the senate.
Currently, residents need a specific excuse, such as being sick, in the military or out of town, to receive an absentee ballot.
Republicans threatened to filibuster the bill Wednesday night, but backed down after democrats removed language that would allow people to permanently sign up to receive an absentee ballot. Instead, people will only get an application for an absentee ballot.
Republicans also protested a section of the legislation that would ban ICE enforcement around polling places. They also wanted to shorten the early voting period.
In 2024, voters approved an amendment to the state constitution removing restrictions on absentee voting.
