Kids, parents and volunteers are expected to ride through Brooklyn together Wednesday morning as part of National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day.

The event encourages students to walk, bike or roll to school while also promoting safer streets and healthier ways to get around.

One of the rides happening in Brooklyn is the Bergen Bike Bus, which meets near Rockaway Avenue and Bergen Street in Brownsville before traveling across the borough with families joining along the route.

Supporters say the bike bus is more than just exercise.

They say riding together helps kids feel safer getting to school, builds community and gives young riders more confidence on busy city streets.

The Bergen Bike Bus has been running since 2022 and rides every Wednesday during the school year.

Advocates also say the event shines a light on street safety and the need for more protected bike lanes across the city.

Vision Zero data through the end of March shows Brooklyn has already seen 11 traffic deaths this year, including one bicyclist killed and 177 bicyclists injured.

Safety experts say riders should use lights, stay alert at intersections, and avoid drivers’ blind spots. Drivers are also being reminded to slow down, look for cyclists before turning or opening doors and give riders enough space on the road.
