Between April 2022 and Sept. 2023, the 28-year-old advertised the 30, 60 and 90-day temporary plates and carried out the sales using Instagram, under the handle @DMVTemps, according to investigators.
Evans first got information about his customers' cars through Instagram direct messages before telling them to send him the money on Zelle. He then used his personal email account to send the forged temporary plates as PDF attachments.
Investigators say he sold plates for New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, California, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia and other states.
"Tyheem Evans defrauded drivers and the DMV with a petty scheme to line his own pockets while making our roads less safe," said James. "I thank our partners in law enforcement and the DMV for their invaluable assistance in this case and their work ensuring all those who violate the law are held accountable. I encourage all New Yorkers seeking license plates to follow the legal process and register with the DMV."
Evans pleaded guilty to one felony count for making and selling forged license plates.
He was sentenced to a three-year conditional discharge and 100 hours of community service.
The investigation into the scheme was led by the Office of the Attorney General, the New York City Department of Investigation and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
