SUNSHINE THIS AFTERNOON; UV INDEX WILL BE HIGH

Cloudy skies and rain showers will make for a damp start to the morning, especially through about 8 a.m., so you’ll want to keep the umbrella handy for the early commute. Watch out for some wet roads and reduced visibility at times. The good news is that conditions will steadily improve as we head through the late morning and into the afternoon. We’ll start to see some breaks of sunshine mixing in with the clouds, and temperatures will climb into the 60s across much of Long Island. Once the sun comes out, it will actually feel pretty comfortable outside. And don’t forget the sunglasses if you’re heading out later today — the UV index will be on the high side despite the morning rain.

For tonight, skies will turn partly cloudy and overall conditions stay fairly quiet. There is still the chance of a brief passing shower overnight, but many spots should remain dry for most of the night. Temperatures will cool back into the upper 40s and lower 50s by early Friday morning, so it will feel a little crisp if you’re out late. Winds stay fairly light overnight, making for a decent evening to open the windows for some fresh air.

Heading into Friday, we’ll keep the mixture of sun and clouds around through much of the day. It won’t be a washout by any means, but there is a slight chance for an isolated shower, especially toward the evening hours. Temperatures once again will be seasonably mild and comfortable. Friday night, clouds will begin to increase as another weak system approaches from the west. A few showers may begin developing toward Saturday morning, with overnight lows hovering around the 50-degree mark.

As we head into the weekend, Saturday looks a bit unsettled with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers around through the day. It won’t rain all the time, but you’ll want to keep the umbrella nearby if you have outdoor plans. High temperatures will stay in the lower 60s. Looking ahead to Mother's Day on Sunday, the forecast is shaping up much better. We’re expecting sunshine for much of the day along with some late-day clouds. There is a chance for a few showers toward the evening hours, but overall it looks like the pick of the weekend with highs warming into the lower 70s.
