A new, 14-story mixed-use building known as “One Sunset” now sits on the corner of 4th Avenue and 25th Street in Sunset Park.
“This is where, sort of, old Brooklyn meets new Brooklyn in a way that feels real and unforced,” said Elizabeth Canela, director of development for Ailanthus.
When it comes to so-called “old Brooklyn,” the building is perched on the foothill of the historic Battle Hill.
“You notice that the architecture steps up to give people living in the building various vantage points,” said Bhaskar Srivastava, architect and founder of DENCITYWORKS Architecture. “It’s all response to the landform, and that’s what makes it unique.”
“One Sunset” meets so-called “new Brooklyn” through its layout by offering 187 affordable and market-rate apartments. The building is made up of all-electric one, two and three-bedroom units.
The complex also features a list of amenities.
“You have a co-working lounge, as well as a double-height gym, a couple of different outdoor private spaces and dining areas, as well as a stunning 14th-floor rooftop with wrap-around of the Brooklyn waterfront and the Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines,” said Vivian Liao, co-founder and principal of Ailanthus.
The rooftop also features a nearly complete mural, which is designed as a tribute to Sunset Park.
Down on the ground level, there’s 6,200 square feet of commercial retail space.
“The building quite literally helps support the infrastructure of the neighborhood from the pedestrian experience, making it feel safer, and really just making something that’s well-rounded and feels like it belongs in the neighborhood even though it’s new,” said Canela.
