The Mount Vernon School Board passed a new school budget after voters rejected the original plan during last week's school budget vote.
Mount Vernon residents must now decide on a revised $275 million spending plan that calls for a 1.5% tax increase.
The original budget came with a $276.2 million price tag and a tax hike of 1.99%.
The plan set aside roughly $40 million for special education while adding positions for math and expanded bilingual and world-language programs, as well as addressing a backlog of building repairs.
District officials warn that if this revised budget fails, they will have to adopt a contingency budget as required by New York State law. The tax levy would stay at roughly last year's level, but there would be major cuts that include extracurricular activities. School Board Trustee Randolf Scott said, "No athletics. No extracurricular activities. No after school. All of that is what is at stake if this budget is not passed."
The revote will cost the district $70,000. Voters will go back to the polls to decide on this revised budget on June 16.
