Curfew imposed around Delaney Hall after another night of clashes

Tensions escalated Saturday night when demonstrations outside the facility again turned chaotic. According to Gov. Mikie Sherrill, masked people threw barriers set up by law enforcement, set fires in the street using tires, and hurled objects at officers, leading police to move in and clear the area.

The situation surrounding the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark continued this weekend, with another night of clashes between protesters and law enforcement leading to a newly announced curfew.

Tensions escalated Saturday night when demonstrations outside the facility again turned chaotic. According to Gov. Mikie Sherrill, masked people threw barriers set up by law enforcement, set fires in the street using tires, and hurled objects at officers, leading police to move in and clear the area.

“Because of their good, fast work, arrests were limited to three people,” Sherrill said Sunday. “Let me be clear, violent, chaotic clashes hurt everyone. They put the lives of both protesters and law enforcement in danger. They take the focus away from people inside Delaney Hall and their families. And they raise the temperature with ICE.”

In response, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office have implemented a mandatory curfew around the detention center. The curfew is in effect nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in an effort to prevent further confrontations and maintain public safety.

Sherrill also announced Sunday that the Department of Homeland Security has allowed family visitation at Delaney Hall to be reinstated.

“State and local law enforcement will help to escort families in,” she said. “It’s critical that everyone in the area allow them to do that safely.”
