Multiple manholes caught fire in Bed-Stuy, leaving residents and businesses without power and forced to brave the heat without air conditioning or fans, according to the FDNY and Con Edison.
Fire crews responded to 1242 Fulton St. just after 6 p.m. Thursday. Citizen app video showed smoke billowing from multiple manholes in the area.
Around 50 Con Edison customers were without power as of 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to its outage map.
The company says its crews are working to make repairs. It says they should be complete around 11:30 p.m.
Con Edison released information about its operations during the extreme heat and humidity, factors it says "...drive up air-conditioning use, increasing demand on the electric system and the potential for scattered outages."
No one had been injured as of Thursday evening, according to the FDNY.
