Chlorine gas leak contained in Valhalla near Kensico Dam as one worker suffers minor burns

A chemical leak at a water facility in Westchester prompted a large emergency response Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. at a Department of Environmental Protection facility on Westlake Drive in Valhalla, near the Kensico Dam.

Officials say a chlorine gas leak was detected, leading crews to establish a large perimeter around the facility.
Nearly 10 different local departments responded, including county hazmat teams and DEP police.
Authorities say one employee suffered minor chemical burns and was taken to the hospital. He has since been treated and released.
Crews worked to plug the leak and kept the area closed off until gas levels dropped to a safe level. Officials say the leak has since been contained. They emphasize there was no threat to the public and no impact on the drinking water supply.
A DEP spokesperson says the water remains safe and continues to meet all federal and state standards.
The cause of the leak remains under investigation by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
