What was once a supermarket on Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights is now the Arcadia, a building with units as well as retail space.

It opened in November. It has amenities like a gym, maker's space, courtyard, in-unit washer and dryer, rooftop views, and sports courts just to name a few.

"We wanted to build a project that respects the deep and historical background of this beautiful neighborhood,” said Berke Kalemoglu, development director at Hudson Companies.

Once the site of a supermarket, the property is now a 328-unit apartment with 99 of them as designated affordable units.

“A component of that being in this building is very critical to support the neighborhood, to support the building," said Kalemoglu.

The building will also include retail, such as a restaurant and a supermarket.

“We know and believe that it is needed, especially in this neighborhood with a lack of grocery stores within short walking distance. We have heard from the residents, the community board, the importance of the grocery store staying, and we made a deal with the existing, previous grocery store owner to bring him back into a state-of-the-art, brand new facility," said Kalemoglu.

Kalemoglu says the building is designed to give back to the community beyond its walls.

“We're hoping to bring in jobs and coffee shops and restaurants and the grocery store that is available and accessible to everyone," said Kalemoglu.

With an emphasis on community spaces like game rooms, common areas and more, Felix Brody says the tenants have already built a strong sense of community.

"It's a community space. Just as much as it is, you know, apartment where, you know, I just go to live, you know, I spend a lot of time in this building, so I really love it," said Brody.

More information about the building can be found on the Arcadian's website.
