Drivers in Sunset Park say potholes along Second Avenue are becoming increasingly difficult to avoid, forcing many motorists to slow down and carefully navigate around damaged sections of the roadway.
News 12 observed drivers at Second Avenue and 39th Street maneuvering around multiple potholes, with some waiting for a clear lane before safely steering around them.
Motorists say the potholes are more than just an inconvenience. They worry they can damage tires and suspension, and become even more dangerous after heavy rain, when standing water can hide how deep they really are. One driver told News 12 that trying to avoid potholes too quickly can also create a safety risk for other drivers.
Several drivers say they're hoping the roadway is repaired soon, calling it a priority before the conditions get any worse. Others say they've taken the extra step of reporting the potholes through 311 in hopes of getting the city's attention.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation about the situation.
“NYC DOT works around the clock to ensure our roads are safe and in good condition. We will inspect this location and address any potholes as needed,” a DOT spokesperson stated.
