A salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of Suffolk County residents is under investigation by the county's Department of Health Services.

A total of 58 patients have been seen by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital doctors while exhibiting symptoms consistent with salmonella infection since the beginning of July, according to hospital officials.

"The majority of the patients were evaluated, treated and discharged. As required, SBSH promptly notified the New York State Department of Health to support its public health investigation," officials said in a statement.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services "is involved in collecting information on a salmonella outbreak on the East End of Long Island," health officials said in a statement.

News 12 has reached out for more information on the salmonella outbreak, such as what the cause might have been, where the patients are from and if there is any ongoing threat to the public.
