A new audit is raising questions about how the MTA has been handling your recycling and your tax dollars.

The MTA inspector general says New York City Transit and its carting contractor regularly mixed recycling with trash at maintenance facilities and bus depots. The practice violates both state and city law.

The audit also found paper and cardboard recycling has dropped sharply since 2019 costing the agency an estimated $100,000 a year in avoidable waste removal expenses.
