State grant seeks to expand art programs in the South Bronx

The site of the former Lincoln Recovery Center in Mott Haven, which once provided free holistic health programs to people in the community living with drug addiction, is one step closer to a new chapter.
In the next couple of years, it will become the HEArts center, a community owned cultural and wellness hub designed to expand access to health, education and arts. As plans for the center move forward, its art programming is also getting a major boost thanks to a new $1.79 million grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
For many who live in the area, the investment represents more than just a new building. They say it's a chance to bring much needed resources and opportunities to the area.
"What this building will provide is an auditorium that, you know, would allow the program to expand, will give our youth in the South Bronx who deserve it all a really good space for enhanced learning opportunities," said Matthew Shore, Director of Planning and Development at South Bronx Unite. "People shouldn't have to go to Manhattan, to other boroughs, as they often have to do to access that kind of service."
Construction on the HEArts Center is expected to start in the fall with completion by 2028.
