Mount Vernon police official fired after arrest in Bronx shooting case involving son

A top official with the Mount Vernon Police Department was terminated after being arrested and charged in connection with a shooting investigation in the Bronx involving her son, according to city officials.
The City of Mount Vernon announced that Jennifer Lackard, the department's deputy commissioner of wellness, was fired effective immediately following her arrest Tuesday morning. She and her son, Chase Lackard, were taken into custody in the Bronx.

Police say 20-year-old Chase Lackard opened fire into a group of people on June 29 near East 162nd Street and Grand Avenue in the Bronx. No one was injured.
According to court documents, prosecutors say Jennifer Lackard and her husband, James, took turns driving a tan Chrysler Pacifica to and from the scene.
News 12 previously reported Chase Lackard's arrest and charges in a police-involved shooting in Soundview on Nov. 22, 2024.
Police say Jennifer Lackard is accused of acting as the getaway driver, alleging she was behind the wheel and drove away from the scene after the shooting.
Both mother and son face multiple charges, including attempted murder, attempted assault, criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy and reckless endangerment. According to court documents, a third family member by the name of James Lackard was indicted as well.
This arrest marks the fifth time this year that a member of the Mount Vernon Police Department has been arrested.
Jennifer Lackard was arraigned on Tuesday. She pleaded not guilty and bail was set at $75,000. She's due back in court in September.
In a statement, city officials said the allegations against Jennifer Lackard are unrelated to her duties with the Mount Vernon Police Department.
News 12 reached out to Lackard's attorney but did not hear back.
