Road Trip Close to Home: Retired FDNY boat turned bar

Lars Viola says the goal was to keep it almost entirely the same while making it into a bar, like turning the hose plugs into taps for wine and beer.

At Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park sits Fireboat.

But Lars Viola, head of Oysters for Crew, says this vessel has no intention of leaving the dock.

"This boat is the Alfred E Smith. This was built in 1961 as a decommissioned fire boat that actually functioned for about 50 years. And now we have turned it into our very own bar and short-order restaurant," said Viola.

Viola says the goal was to keep it almost entirely the same while making it into a bar, like turning the hose plugs into taps for wine and beer.

“We kind of like to keep the history of the boat alive as much as we can, you know, but still make it functional," said Viola.

Fireboat offers cocktails, views, and bites like ceviche and chips, prawn skewers, and more while also getting to experience New York City history.

“Where else do you get to be a part of history and really enjoy yourself out on the water and kind of feel like you're not in the city anymore?" said Viola.

More information about Fireboat can be found on the establishment's website.
