For more than three decades, Passaic’s Annual Mexican Parade has brought thousands of people together to celebrate Mexican culture, heritage and traditions. The event has become a cherished summer tradition, transforming the city’s streets into a vibrant showcase of music, food and community pride.

This year, however, the celebration will not take place as planned.

The organization United Mexican Americans announced that the parade has been postponed, citing concerns about ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity and its potential impact on members of the local community.

Many residents say they understand and support the decision.

“I think it’s fair because of the ICE raids right now,” said Passaic resident Jennifer Perez. “I think it would be too inconsiderate from our part to come together and celebrate.”

The cancellation is expected to affect more than just parade attendees. Local business owners say the annual event typically provides a significant economic boost, attracting visitors from across New Jersey and neighboring states.

“There are a lot of people that now will not come to see our businesses,” said Veronica Rodriguez, a local business owner. “People from different places, even different states come here. A year ago, that’s what I experienced.”

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora voiced his support for the decision in a public statement, recognizing the importance of the city’s Mexican community and its contributions to Passaic:

“Our Mexican community is a blessing to our city, and I will support their decision to do what is best for them and also continue to push for events and activities in our city that highlight our wonderful Mexican community.”

"We can’t control the circumstances,” Rodriguez added. “I’m sad it’s not happening. As a Mexican, we will not have the opportunity to share our traditions with other countries and cultures.”

When asked about arrests at cultural celebrations, ICE provided the following statement to News 12:

“Those who are here legally and are not breaking other laws have nothing to fear.”

Still, many in Passaic say they will miss one of the city’s most anticipated cultural events.

“I was eagerly looking forward to this parade,” Perez said.

While the future date of the postponed parade has not yet been announced, community members remain hopeful that the celebration will return when conditions allow, continuing a tradition that has united generations of Mexican Americans in Passaic.
