New York City is testing innovative bus shelter designs in Brownsville aimed at tackling two growing climate-related challenges: extreme heat and flooding.
The pilot program, launched through a partnership between city agencies and nonprofit organization Resilient Cities Catalyst, introduces the city's first green roof bus shelter and a first-of-its-kind heat-resilient bus shelter, both designed to make waiting for public transit safer and more comfortable.
For residents in Brownsville, one of the city's neighborhoods most vulnerable to extreme heat, the improvements could make a significant difference.
"The climate crisis is a transportation issue and bus riders are at the front of it," said Elizabeth Adams, senior advisor for Fast & Free Buses.
Commuters can now find New York City's first green roof bus shelter at the intersection of Pitkin and Saratoga avenues. The structure is covered with native plants and wildflowers that not only add greenery to the streetscape but also help absorb rainwater.
Officials say the roof can store up to 16 gallons of stormwater, helping reduce runoff and lessen the impact of flooding during heavy rain events.
Just a few blocks away sits another climate-focused innovation - a heat-resilient bus shelter designed to combat rising temperatures.
"The way that it works is that we put an adhesive, reflective material on the roof of the bus shelter that reflects the sun," said Louise Yeung, New York City's chief climate officer. "It doesn't absorb and trap heat in the bus shelter like a greenhouse."
According to data collected through the pilot, the shelter remains about 25 degrees cooler than traditional bus shelters that do not use the reflective materials.
"We want the bus to come faster and make sure that people aren't waiting too long," Adams said. "And when they're waiting for the bus, they deserve to not be waiting in extreme heat."
With roughly 70% of Brownsville residents relying on public transportation, community leaders say the pilot represents a meaningful investment in a neighborhood that is often overlooked in climate discussions.
"Oftentimes communities like Brownsville get left out, especially around climate conversations and heating," said Ineisha Williford, executive director of the Brownsville BID. "This is the first of many to say, 'Here's what we're doing with your concerns.' It's also beautiful just to have here."
The green roof bus shelter pilot is expected to remain in place through November, while the heat-resilient shelter will stay installed through May of next year.
City officials say community feedback will play a major role in determining whether the designs are expanded to additional neighborhoods across New York City.
If successful, the pilot could serve as a model for making public transportation infrastructure more resilient as the city faces increasingly frequent heat waves and intense rainfall.
