Rebuilding Brooklyn: New affordable housing in Bushwick provides free social services to supportive housing tenants

A new fully affordable housing building on DeKalb Avenue in Bushwick is also providing free social services within the building.
The building has 127 units - 45 of which are reserved for families who were formerly homeless, young families and young women who are pregnant. It offers studios to three-bedroom units.
The building is a collaboration between Camber Property Group and RiseBoro.
Tyler Wise is a mother of two. She moved to the complex from a shelter.
“I was kind of in dark holes, but then once I realized that I was moving very soon. And then I came here to see the beautiful building and nice apartments, I was just like, okay, hopefully this is like a start to something good. And honestly, I wasn't wrong," said Wise.
For the supportive housing tenants, they have in-house access to free services like counseling, career counseling, school placement help and more.
“It's right in the palm of your hand. And I tell them all the time to take the opportunity. Take all the opportunity you need, all the resources you require. Utilize it here. The goal is to support you, but to help you to grow and to become independent," said RiseBoro early childhood clinician Angelika Heard.
Wise says the services have made a big impact.
“I will finally be working. I haven't worked in two years, so I'll finally be working, have an opportunity for my kids, for, you know, different programs for them. Yeah. It's just been great," said Wise.
Wise also says it's given her something she's always dreamed of.
“All my life, I just wish for somewhere to have somewhere to call home. And my children, for them to have somewhere safe. A safe environment, a gated environment at that," said she says.
