Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that the city has started installing 17 new public bathrooms across all five boroughs as part of a $4 million pilot program aimed at expanding access to free public restrooms.

The modular, ADA-accessible units will be placed in high-traffic public spaces and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Locations include sites near Yankee Stadium, Cooper Square, Malcolm X Plaza, Plaza Alianza Dominicana, Columbus Park, Astoria Boulevard South, and the North Shore Esplanade, among others across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

Users can access the bathrooms through QR codes, text message entry, the Throne mobile app, or tap cards distributed by community partners.

The new facilities will be located at Yankee Stadium, Admiral Farragut Playground, Mapes Park, and Monsignor Raul Del Valle Square in the Bronx; Columbus Park, Milestone Park, Fulton Street and Truxton Street, and Avenue C Plaza in Brooklyn; Astoria Boulevard South and 31st Street, Northern Boulevard and 31st Street, Northern Boulevard and 54th Street, and 34th Avenue and 64th Street in Queens; Cooper Square, Malcolm X Plaza, Delancey Street and Suffolk Street, and Plaza Alianza Dominicana in Manhattan; and the North Shore Esplanade on Staten Island.

The one-year pilot will help the city evaluate demand, maintenance needs, and the potential for expanding a citywide public restroom network.
