Eastern Parkway Library begins nearly $37M transformation

The Eastern Parkway Library may not look much like a library right now. Behind its locked gates, walls have been opened, rooms have been cleared and crews are deep into demolition.
The work is part of a nearly $37 million project that will expand and renovate the Crown Heights branch.
The library has served the community since 1914. Plans call for keeping the historic character of the Carnegie building, while creating more space.
“The renovation will expand public space at the library by over 50%, creating significantly more room for patrons while preserving the historic beauty of the Carnegie building,” said Linda Johnson, president and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library.
The project will add another floor and a new section behind the current building. It will also upgrade the library’s electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling and fire alarm systems.
Once construction is finished, the expanded library will include a teen zone, two children’s areas, a classroom, a community room and several new places to read and learn. Plans also include a renovated courtyard, rooftop reading area and a large glass facade designed to bring more natural light into the building.
A new elevator and entrance ramp will make the entire library accessible to people with disabilities. Crews are currently focused on demolition and preparing the building for its new layout.
“Where we’re standing will be the teen space, public art mezzanine overlooking the lower level, and then back here will be the kiddo space,” project manager Philip Jenkin said while leading News 12 through the construction site.
The Eastern Parkway branch will remain closed during construction, but library services are expected to return to the neighborhood this fall.
A temporary pop-up library will open in a space provided by the Settlement Housing Fund. IKEA is donating furniture, and Amazon is providing additional support.
People will be able to check out books, attend programs and use technology at the temporary location.
The expanded Eastern Parkway Library is expected to open in summer 2028.
