Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Thursday that construction will begin on Box Street Park in Greenpoint.
The announcement fulfills a decades-old, unfulfilled promise to transform the property into a public waterfront attraction.
The future park will be built on the site of a former MTA facility. Officials say the $40 million project will transform the area into an open green space with gardens.
“Construction is set to begin this fall and will be completed by the end of summer 2028,” Mamdani said.
The park will also feature an elevated esplanade, ADA-accessible pathways, terraced granite seating, a basketball court, a picnic area and a public restroom.
