Brooklyn man dies after falling ill in custody at NYPD’s 67th Precinct

A 54-year-old Brooklyn man who fell ill in custody at the NYPD's 67th Precinct has died, according to police.

Paramedics took 54-year-old Reginald Newkirk to Kings County Hospital on Saturday afternoon. He was pronounced dead the following day.

Newkirk's passing marks the eighth death in custody this year in New York City.

According to public court records, Newkirk was arrested on Friday and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was awaiting arraignment at the time of his death.

The NYPD says its Force Investigation Division is investigating Newkirk's death.

News 12 reached out to the NYPD for additional information on the incident that led to Newkirk’s arrest and is awaiting a response.
