What started as a way to honor his late father has turned into a family wine business in Hicksville.
Raj Chattoo says his father always dreamed of seeing the family name on a building. After his father died, Raj came up with an idea. "I'm going to make a wine with our last name." That idea became Chattoo 1942, a wine brand made in Hicksville with grapes from California.
Raj's wife, Arti, and their daughters are also helping with the business, making it a true family effort. The family also gives back, donating part of the proceeds to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Raj says the cause is personal because his daughter received help from St. Jude when she was younger.
The family recently had another special moment when they saw a stranger order their wine while they were having dinner at Tesoro in Westbury.
For the Chattoos, the business is about more than wine. It's about keeping their family name and their father's memory alive. "We want our kids to continue on with the brand, the name, honoring their grandfather just making it a really family business," said Arti.
The bottles are available at select local restaurants and liquor stores. You can also purchase the wine directly through Chattoo's website or in person at Wine U Design in Hicksville.
