The New York City Department of Transportation is building two bus boarding islands on Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
NYC DOT officials say that while they are resurfacing the road there, they will build the islands, which they say will reduce bus delays and improve safety.
City sources tell News 12 the first island will route cyclists so that there is no crossover with buses. The second island will be for buses during layovers.
“It’s good, people can sit down and rest," said commuters like Angeline Gillespie.
The changes bring construction and temporary changes to bus stops, leaving some commuters like Rosa Flores confused.
“I'm disappointed. I’m going to find out where the street is because Brooklyn is not my home. I live in the Bronx. I am lost right now. I don’t know where I am going. I was taking this bus for more than 20 years. It was unnecessary. They didn’t have to do that. It was safe for us to say here. It was unnecessary," said Flores.
People like Nakia Benjamin say it has potential.
“From what I think, I see it could be a good idea, but I don’t know for sure yet," said Benjamin.
City sources familiar with the project tell News 12 it will finish in a couple of weeks.
