NYC's 'Debt Demolisher' program offers relief on outstanding city violations

The initiative, known as "Debt Demolisher," allows qualifying property owners to settle certain city debts by eliminating accumulated interest charges and paying a reduced amount. The program is available for 90 days and is designed to help New Yorkers struggling with unpaid fines and violations.

A new city program is giving eligible homeowners and small business owners a chance to reduce the cost of outstanding city violations.

The initiative, known as "Debt Demolisher," allows qualifying property owners to settle certain city debts by eliminating accumulated interest charges and paying a reduced amount. The program is available for 90 days and is designed to help New Yorkers struggling with unpaid fines and violations.

For some small business owners, those violations can quickly become a financial burden.

"As a small business owner, we're already struggling to keep up with our bills," said Martina, co-owner of Ahmani's Jus Juice. "Then here comes the city piling on more payments."

Eligible city violations can range from building code infractions to sanitation-related offenses, including improper disposal of items such as mattresses. Under the new program, eligible owners may be able to resolve those outstanding debts at a significant discount.

"If there's debt relief, reducing it would definitely help us pay more," Martina said. "Sometimes the fines are kind of ridiculous and out of our control. We try our best to keep everything clean and take out the garbage when we're supposed to take out the garbage, but we can't control what other people do."

Patrick Victor, co-owner of Mr. P's Homemade Ice Cream, said his business was recently hit with a $3,000 fine after running out of hand soap. While he hopes to avoid future violations, he believes the program could help business owners facing similar challenges.

"It's a good idea," Victor said. "It should be longer, though. I just want the city to support all small and Black-owned businesses in the neighborhood so we can thrive."

City officials project the program will generate an additional $25 million in revenue that may not have been paid otherwise.

Homeowners also said the relief could make a difference as many families continue to deal with rising costs.

"Of course, in this economy right now where everything is too expensive, a break for homeowners is a great thing," said Brooklyn homeowner Natasha Louis. "If you could pay less or none at all, that's a great thing."

John Leger agreed, adding that extending the program could help even more New Yorkers.

"If they could make the program a little bit longer, that would be helpful for everybody who lives in New York," Leger said. "A lot of times, you're not expecting these things."
